March 14th, 5pm-6pm, Dr. Dr. Ana-Maria Olteteanu will give the talk: "Computationally modelling creativity with cognitive AI systems” at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Abstract

Creativity is one of the most interesting, surprising and productive cognitive skills that has driven human civilization, but also a very complex multi-faceted skill to study.

Ana-Maria Olteteanu is the Principal Investigator of the ‘Creative problem solving in cognitive systems’ (CreaCogs) project. CreaCogs is a unified theoretical framework of creativity, aiming to implement a small set of processes, and account for a varied typology of creativity tasks. Various parts of the framework were computationally implemented as a set of cognitive systems prototypes. These cognitive systems model the Remote Associates Test, the Alternative Uses Test, and offer the promise of solving insight problems.

This talk provides on overview of some of the computational systems within CreaCogs so far, with a focus on models related to creative association. The difficulties in building computational implementations in specific creativity domains are discussed, from a research methodology perspective. Tools and datasets created to conquer these difficulties are highlighted.

An unexpected side effect of building cognitive AI systems solving creativity tasks is acquiring a new level of precision in creativity measurement tools. This and its potential future impact on creativity research are briefly explored.
