Hodge theory and combinatorics

Among the pillars of algebraic geometry and positivity are the Lefschetz
and Hodge type theorems. I will survey the role these theorems play in
combinatorics, including their impact on McMullen's conjecture for face
numbers of simplicial polytopes and Rota's log-concavity conjecture.
Finally, I will present some recent results that prove standard
conjectures of the Lefschetz and Hodge type in a purely combinatorial
setting, extending far beyond methods of classical algebraic geometry, and
apply this to Rota's conjecture.

(The last part reports on recent joint work with June Huh (Princeton
University & IAS) and Eric Katz (University of Waterloo))
