What is … a group representation?

This page hosts information on Giovanni de Gaetano's talk "What is … a group representation?" at the "What is …?" seminar. The talk will take place on Friday, June 29, 2:00pm at the *TU EUREF campus*. This talk will help you better understand the talk by Martin Bridson, which will start at 3pm.

Abstract

Representation theory is the main bridge between abstract and linear algebra. Moreover, representations can be found in virtually any field in mathematics and can generalize many commonly used objects. In this talk, we will approach the fundamentals of the theory, with specific attention to the representations of groups. If time permits, we will clarify some notions useful for the following Friday talk by Prof. Bridson, such as finitely presented groups and SL(n,Z) representations.
