Kermack-McKendrick formulation of epidemic models
Abstract: In their pioneering 1927 paper, Kermack and McKendrick consider the spread of an infectious disease in a population that is demographically closed, and where infection leads to permanent immunity. Under these assumptions, they model how the number of susceptible individuals evolves over time; the mathematical formulation of their model is an integral equation.
In this talk, we first introduce the Kermack-McKendrick model. We pay special attention to the case where the infectivity of an individual depends in an exponential way on the age of the infection. We show how - in this very special case - the Kermack-McKendrick model reduces to the SIR compartmental model.
