Getting Started

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Freie Universität Berlin! Click above to find some info collated by former and current students for incoming students at the department.

Course Registration

Campus Management and Blackboard are two necessary tools that help you organize your studies.

Campus Management is the tool for course (de-)registration and gives you an overview of your (completed) courses and grades. It also serves as the basis for the generation of your Transcript of Records.

On Blackboard, you can find all courses that you have registered for in Campus Management and any information about these courses that the lecturer has uploaded, such as announcements for future sessions, reading material, presentations, etc.

If you wish to attend extracurricular classes that you cannot enroll in via Campus Management, or if you are lacking access to a blackboard course for other reasons, please address the lecturer of the course by e-mail. Please note that given the limited number of places, enrollment cannot be guaranteed.

Internship/ Forschungspraxis

Students in the track "Data Science in the Life Sciences" must complete a research oriented internship of about 7 weeks (270 hours) in a research or industrial organisation. Check here for more information.

Course Recognitions

Sometimes courses may not be available for enrollment in campus management, especially if they are offered at other universities in Berlin or elsewhere. In general, you will need to:

  • consider what module the course matches,
  • contact the head of the examination board for approval prior to enrolling,
  • fill in the course recognition form after completion.

Master Thesis

The master’s thesis is intended to demonstrate that a student has the ability to work independently on problems in the field of data science using the relevant research methods. They should be able to present their findings in writing and discuss them orally, as well as critically assess them.

Students need to find a supervisor and assessors, register the thesis, join a colloquium and present their findings, and finally submit the completed work to the examination office. The relevant forms and related FAQs are on the website of the examination office, more info on assessors, supervisors, and the colloquium is in the wiki.
