Challenges of Detecting Hate Speech in the Evolving Online Language of Adolescents: Definitions, Data, and Bias.
Abstract: Hate speech remains a major challenge for safe online communication, particularly among adolescents, who are especially vulnerable and have a right to develop free from harm, including online.This talk highlights key concepts and challenges in fostering safer spaces through algorithmic hate speech detection: missing or unrepresentative datasets; inconsistent definitions of hate speech; multilingual and diverse language practices; outdated classifiers struggling to keep pace with evolving discourse; and algorithmic bias that can disadvantage the youth. The presentation will outline these issues, discuss current research, and address general ethical considerations for fair and effective automated moderation build for adolescent audiences.
