Low-power internet of things security: The Landscape
Abstract: The availability of cheap low-power microcontrollers and low-power radios is driving the emergence of the Internet of Things. In parallel, security concerns grow with the emergence of these devices. While the security concerns are similar to the general purpose computing space, the solutions available on commodity compute hardware do not fit the requirements for the constrained microcontroller class of devices. To mitigate these security concerns, specific security mechanisms and solutions are required.
In this talk we will start with an introduction in constrained embedded devices, both hardware and firmware. I show an overview of security challenges around these constrained devices and we discuss the various approaches.
I follow this with a presentation on a number of solutions for security challenges: post-quantum digital signatures, firmware updates, software sandboxing. I show that these solutions can be deployed on the smallest of devices.
