Mathemagic - The Banach-Tarski Paradox and its Astonishing Corollaries
Abstract: In 1924 Stefan Banach and Alfred Tarski proved that it is possible to make two out of one:They showed how to cut a ball into finitely many pieces and rearrange them by rigid motion to form two exact copies of the original ball. The counter-intuitive nature of this theorem due to its seemingly violation of fundamental physical principles like mass conservation has eared it the state of a paradox. It has been widely discussed in the community ever since its publication looking for answers to this strange behaviour. This talk will walk the audience through a proof in an easily accessible way and conclude with some not less surprising corollaries.
