Singular monopoles on the direct product of a compact Riemann surface with a circle
Abstract: Magnetic monopoles have been of interest in theoretical physics since the 1930s, when Dirac conjectured their existence and studied their implications. In this talk, we will examine the monopole equation from a mathematical perspective. After a brief historical introduction and a description of singular points, we will see how the monopole equation can be decomposed into a real and a complex equation. This decomposition allows us to define the scattering map associated to a monopole. Finally, we will see how Charbonneau and Hurtubise used this map to establish a bijection between the moduli space of singular monopoles and the moduli space of t-stable bundle pairs.
