News from Feb 21, 2019

February 28th, 1pm, the Thesis Defense: "Implementation of software for the regular crawling of DFG funding data with special consideration of data quality" by Daniel Spaude will take place at HCC Lab.

Abstract

The German Research Foundation, Germany's largest provider of third-party funding, regularly awards grants to persons and institutions working in the field of science. Using the GEPRIS web application, the DFG provides information on the funding projects it has approved, including the funding period, the discipline, the research topic and the persons and institutions involved.

Until today, the data provided is only available via the user interface of the GEPRIS application; there is no official public API or database export via which the data can be consumed in a structured manner and processed automatically. This makes a deeper work with the data depending on the question extremely difficult or impossible.

The aim of the present work is to implement a new development of the crawler solution which is easy to put into operation and which does not focus on visualization concepts but on data quality. In particular, the identification of suitable data quality criteria and the description of suitable concepts for their measurement and compliance with the data obtained by the crawler are in the foreground.

The defence will be held in german.
