In this talk I shall give an overview of some parts of a new approach to the classification of finite simple groups. I will pay special attention to the final part of the programme, that of recognizing the simple groups from some fragment of their subgroup structure. This means that I will discuss how local properties of finite groups can be used to determine global properties of finite groups. I will describe some of the new recognitions theorems and explain why the prime three is of special significance.
