FAQ Course registration at FU
Blackboard is barely used at our department and more at the others. Especially if you study something like teaching, related areas from the other departments or take general ABV-courses you'll get in touch with Blackboard regularly.
The registration for courses here is different than for Whiteboard. First of all, you have to register once in Blackboard to have access and that the system "knows" you. Then the registration is mostly automatically there. When you've registered the courses in Campus Management, the data get transfered from there to Blackboard overnight and your course then should show up. If you de-register, it is similar. The course will vanish overnight in Blackboard automatically.
But there are some cases when you have to register yourself in Blackboard. It is possible to search for courses. They are ordered by department, so there a many courses. But only courses will show up where you can register yourself. Most of the time you need a password for registering which you get from the lecturer or coordinator. If there are problems, the coordinators from the specific course mostly are able to register you manually. For that they need your username for the My.FU-account and sometimes your student ID as well.
You can find a guide for registrating courses in Whiteboard here.
In Whiteboard you can register your courses manually on your own without the need to be registered in Campus Management. For that, log in in Whiteboard with your student account and choose "FU Site Browser" from your home-landing page overview. On that page all courses are listed for the chosen semester and faculty in a tabular. You can also search for specific courses. If you've found your course, you can see a button saying "Join" on the right in the tabular. As soon as you click on it, you are registered.
But there is also another way: Instead "FU Site Browser" you can also choose "Membership" from your home landing page, it works quite similar. But there is an additional step: if you land on your "Membership" page, the first courses you see are the courses you are already a member in, called "Your sites". Next to that tab there is "Joinable sites". Choose that one and you get to the overview of courses you are not a member in. Then you can choose your courses like the other version.
Note: The differece lies here: As the name already sugests, you can find all courses under "Joinable Sites" from the Membership page where you are not a member (yet). With "FU Site Browser", you find all courses listed there, even those you already are registered but with the remark that you can't join anymore as you already are a member.
Note (again): Sometimes your course is not listed there right from the beginning. Most of the time it is just the pre-setting from the filters. Sometimes the semester is not the one you are looking for, other times it is pre-chosen the wrong department or the wrong faculty. Just change it and your courses should show up. So make sure that the right settings are chosen before you look for your courses.
Because you have to formally register in Campus Management, it can be that your courses already show up without registering for them in Whiteboard maually. But this only happens if it is safe with capacities and it happens mostly over night. So don't be too surprised if they don't show up yet!
Because in Campus Management your study progress is registered and documented, it is necessary to register for your courses for the specific semester during the registration period formally. Because this registration is formally also the legally valid course registration, the registration is mandatory before doing anything for the course (like taking the exam).
But don't worry, during the period you can register and de-register your course as you wish on your own if you want to change something or don't want to take the course anymore. But also: there are some courses which are restricted in the number of participants. If you want to take one of those, You should register within the first phase of the period because after that you can only take those with capacity left.
The whole registration period lasts one month and is divided into two periods. Period one ends on the Friday before the lecture period starts at noon with distributing the spaces to those who registered. Phase two ends at the end of the second week of lectures and is for making changes regarding the course registration. As soon as period two ends, the registrations are fixed.
For the registrations itself you log in in Campus Management (either directly or via your My.FU-portal) with your FU-account. You can find your courses under "An-/Abmeldung"(registration/de-registration). If it is a new course, in the bottom left corner is a button saying "Neues Modul auswählen" (choose new course). Then there is a list with all courses which you can register for. Choose those you want to take. Because most of our courses have two parts (lecture/exam and exercise/tutorial) you usually have to register for two parts to do a complete registration. To register you click on the box, save it and confirm it. And that is all, with that you are registered for the exam (if you register for the lecture) and the tutorial part. The specific tutorial group is then later chosen in the learning management system.
This video shows you more precisely how Campus Management works and also explains more how the registration works. You can find here a reference guide.
Moodle is a Learning Management System, just like Blackboard or Whiteboard used here at FU and open-source based. It is also supposed to take over from Blackboard and become the solely platform for learning management.
To register for your course here, you first have to click on the course title which then leads you to the registration page. Some courses will ask for a password which you'll get from the lecturer. Some others don't ask for one and you can simply register.
At this department we mainly use Whiteboard and Campus Management.
Campus Management is the official platform of the university to collect and document all the progress and achievements towards your degree. For that it is mandatory to sign up for your courses each semester there, so your achievement can be documented there at all. If you don't sign up there, it is not possible to document your achievement for the specific course there.
Whiteboard however, is one of the Learning Management Platforms we use and is a tool to have access to Resources and Materials for that course (e.g. notes from the lectures, exercise sheets, other material, literature, ...) and to register for a specific tutorial session. It is not mandatory to sign up here for the course, but we highly recommend this to stay updated. Sometimes there is a not binding registration for exams there as well but it is only used to plan the capacities or the time slots.
Sometimes some of the other courses at this department use other platforms instead of Whiteboard like Moodle or Blackboard. Your lecturers are always telling you what they will use in the first lecture. Other departments mainly use the other platforms.
