Prof. Günter M. Ziegler ist seit Juli 2018 der Präsident der Freien Unversität Berlin. Von November 2018 bis November 2020 war er auch der erste Sprecher der Berliner Universitätsallianz, die er weiterhin als Mitglied des “Board of Directors” begleitet. Von September 2020 bis August 2022 war er stellvertretender Vorstand von German U15.

Ziegler ist geborener Münchner, Jahrgang 1963. Nach Studium an der LMU München promovierte er 1987 am MIT bei Anders Björner. Nach vier Jahren in Augsburg und einem Winter in Stockholm kam er 1992 nach Berlin, wo er am ZIB Berlin arbeitete und sich an der TU Berlin habilitierte. Von Januar 1995 bis Februar 2011 war er Professor für Mathematik an der TU Berlin. Er war Mitglied des DFG-Forschungszentrums MATHEON - Mathematik für Schlüsseltechnologien seit dessen Gründung 2002. In den drei Jahren 2006-2008 war Ziegler Präsident der Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung (DMV). 2006-2007 war er der erste Chair der Berlin Mathematical School, die er auch 2016-2018 wieder geleitet hat.

Seit März 2011 ist er MATHEON-Professor an der Freien Universität Berlin. Er ist Mitglied der der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW), der Deutschen Nationalakademie Leopoldina und der Deutschen Akademie der Technikwissenschaften acatech und ein Fellow der American Mathematical Society. Er ist ein langjähriges Präsidiumsmitglied der der DMV, 2010-2018 war er ein Vorstandmitglied der BBAW, 2014-2018 war er Mitglied des Senats der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG.

Seine mathematische Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit Aspekten der Diskreten Geometrie, besonders der Theorie der Polyeder, sowie mit Fragen der Algebraischen Topologie, die sich aus geometrischen Problemen ergeben. Für seine Forschung wurde er 2001 mit dem Leibnizpreis der DFG ausgezeichnet. 2010 wurde ihm eine ERC Advanced Grant zugesprochen. 2017 erhielt er den Wissenschaftspreis des Regierenden Bürgermeisters von Berlin.

Er engagiert sich für ein vielfältiges und lebendiges Bild der Mathematik in der Öffentlichkeit. Er hat das Jahr der Mathematik 2008 initiiert und koordiniert. In der Folge initiierte der das Medienbüro Mathematik der DMV und das Netzwerkbüro Schule - Hochschule der DMV sowie später das "MIP.labor", eine Ideenwerkstatt für Wissenschaftsjournalismus in Mathematik, Informatik und Physik, gefördert von der Klaus Tschira Stiftung. 2008 erhielt er den Communicatorpreis der DFG und des Stifterverbands für die deutsche Wissenschaft. 2021 und 2022 hat er den Lenkungskreis von Wissenschaft im Dialog geleitet. Mit Martin Aigner schrieb er Das BUCH der Beweise, das inzwischen in vierzehn verschiedenen Sprachen vorliegt (fünfte Auflage 2018). 2011 erschien "Darf ich Zahlen? Geschichten aus der Mathematik" als Taschenbuch bei Piper (München) und 2013 "Mathematik - Das ist doch keine Kunst!" (Knaus-Verlag, München). Sein neuestes Buch ist "Panorama der Mathematik" mit Andreas Loos und Rainer Sinn (Springer, 2022).

Günter M. Ziegler is the President of Freie Universität Berlin, since 2018. From November 2018 until November 2020 he was also the first Spokesperson of the Berlin University Alliance, which he continues to serve as a member of the “Board of Directors.” 2020-2022 he served for two years as the Vice Chair of the German U15 group of research-intensive universities.

Ziegler was born in München, Germany, in 1963. He got a Ph.D. at M.I.T. with Anders Björner in 1987. After four years in Augsburg and a winter in Stockholm he arrived in Berlin in 1992, where he worked at ZIB Berlin and completed his "habilitation" at TU Berlin. In 1995 became a Professor of Mathematics at TU Berlin. He has been a member of the DFG Research Center MATHEON - Mathematics for Key Technologies since its start in 2002. For 2006-2008 he was the President of the German Mathematical Society DMV. In 2006-2007 he was the founding chair of Berlin Mathematical School, which he chaired again 2016-2018.

In 2011 joined Freie Universität Berlin as a "MATHEON Professor". He is a member of the of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and of the National Academy of Science and Engineering acatech, and a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. He is a long-time member of the board of DMV. In addition, he was a member of the executive board of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities from 2010 to 2018 and, 2014-2018 he was a member of the Senate of the German Science Foundation DFG.

His research centers on Discrete Geometry (especially polytopes), as well as on questions in Algebraic Topology motivated by combinatorial and geometric problems. His honors include a Leibniz Prize (2001) of the German Research Foundation and the Chauvenet Prize (2004) of the Mathematical Association of America. In 2010 he was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant. 2017 he was the recipient of the Berlin Science Prize, awarded by the Governing Mayor of Berlin.

He is active in science communication, contributing to a multi-facetted and lively image of Mathematics in public. He initiated and co-organized the German National Science Year Jahr der Mathematik 2008. Subsequently he initiated the DMV Mathematics Media Office and the DMV Network Office Schools-Universities, as well as later the  "MIP.labor", an experimental platform for science journalism in Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics funded by the Klaus Tschira Foundation. He is the recipient of the 2008 Communicator Award of DFG and Stifterverband. For the two years 2021 and 2022 he chaired the steering committee of Wissenschaft im Dialog. He is the author of Lectures on Polytopes (Springer 1995), of Proofs from THE BOOK (with Martin Aigner, Springer 1998, sixth edition 2018), which has by now appeared in 14 languages, and of "Darf ich Zahlen? Geschichten aus der Mathematik" (English translation: "Do I count? Stories from Mathematics", CRC 2013). His latest popular book was "Mathematik - Das ist doch keine Kunst!" (Knaus-Verlag, München 2013), followed by "Panorama der Mathematik" with Andreas Loos and Rainer Sinn (Springer, 2022).
