Bachelor mathematics
Since the winter semester 2024/25, there has been a new study regulation for the Bachelor's program in mathematics (available only in German) at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Free University of Berlin.
1. Brief Description
The undergraduate mathematics program has a standard duration of 6 semesters. It comprises 180 credit points (CP) according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which are divided into the basic area (Grundlagenbereich), the supplementary area (Ergänzungsbereich), the general vocational preparation (allgemeine Berufsvorbereitung, ABV for short), the specialization area (Vertiefungsgebiet), and the bachelor's thesis and its defense.
2. Basic Area
The basic area includes mandatory courses such as analysis, linear algebra, numerics, stochastics, and computer-oriented mathematics. A detailed description including the CPs can be found here.
3. Specialization Area
The specialization area contains the mandatory module Scientific Working in Mathematics (Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten in der Mathematik) and allows for choosing modules in a range of 20 to 40 CPs from various mathematical fields. A complete list is displayed here, on page 1149.
4. Supplementary Area
Here, modules in a range from 10 to 30 CPs from any field offered at FU (except mathematics) can be chosen as long as the limitations on the number of participants allow for participation. Further information is collected here.
5. General Vocational Preparation
This area consists of the mandatory module Communication about Mathematics (Kommunikation über Mathematik) and the mandatory internship. In total, 30 CPs fall within this area in variable shares. Additionally, modules labelled as 'ABV' offered by the department of mathematics and computer science can be chosen. A list of the offers from mathematics is shown on page 1150 in here. Further, there are ABV-offers by the FUB-IT, presented here. Language courses are offered here.
6. Exemplary Study Plan
Exemplary study plans for beginning in summer term or winter term, respectively, are displayed here, pages 1175 and 1176.
7. Expired Study Regulations
Next to the current study regulation, here, a collection of actual and expired study regulations is provided.
