Adaptive Multilevel Lagrange-Galerkin Methods for the Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations

German Title: Adaptive Multilevel Lagrange-Galerkin-Methoden für die inkompressiblen Navier-Stokes-Gleichungen

Abstract: For the numerical treatment of the instationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, we apply adaptive methods to the well-known Lagrange-Galerkin methods in the sense of Rothe's method. To solve the generalized Stokes problems, adaptive techniques and error estimators will be presented for both divergence-free and the stabilized finite elements. The arising sparse linear systems will be solved by multigrid methods; in the case of the divergence-free element we develop a simplified $L^2$-prolongation operator. Numerous examples demonstrate the applicability of the adaptive concepts.

German Summary: Zur effizienten, numerischen Behandlung der instationären, inkompressiblen Navier-Stokes-Gleichungen werden adaptive Methoden auf das bekannte Lagrange-Galerkin-Verfahren angewendet, welches eine theoretische Darstellung im Sinne der Rothe-Methode findet. Zur Lösung der verallgemeinerten Stokes-Probleme werden adaptive Techniken und Fehlerschätzer für divergenz-freie als auch stabilisierte Finite-Elemente vorgestellt. Die dünn-besetzten linearen Gleichungssysteme werden mit modernen Mehrgitter-Verfahren gelöst; im Falle der divergenz-freien Elemente wird ein vereinfachter $L^2$-Prolongations-Operator entwickelt. Zahlreiche numerische Beispiele demonstrieren die Anwendbarkeit des adaptiven Konzepts.
