The aim of the project ‘PIA: An interactive patient information assistant for patient education’ is to develop and validate the AI-supported patient information assistant (‘PIA’) for a range of selected educational topics in the clinic. PIA is intended to serve as a digital interface between the hospital and patients by using generative artificial intelligence (AI) to answer questions about the planned procedure before the conventional information sheets are provided and the consultation with the doctor takes place. This project builds on preliminary work in which the underlying technology from earlier BMBF projects was already transferred to patient education and led to the creation of a minimal PIA prototype. This system was tested in initial use cases (anaesthesia and computer tomography) with clinical partners. In contrast to this minimal system, the current project focuses on the further development and validation of the PIA app in four new, complex clinical use cases (obstetrics and three common surgical procedures). To this end, a secure, fact-based and dynamic Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system is to be developed and validated that is specifically adapted to the clinical context. The main objectives are to implement mechanisms for error detection and plausibility checks, to develop dynamic adaptation of the response style to the patient
and user-centred interaction models, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the system in the clinic. With PIA, we aim to 1. improve the quality of information provided and thus reduce patient uncertainty, 2. enable noticeable time savings for medical staff, who can then focus on the individual characteristics of patients, and 3. make the overall process more efficient, which will be reflected in reduced costs for hospitals.
