Master Thesis - AR Flood Hazard Maps

Kurzbeschreibung

Flood hazard maps illustrate the spatial extent and water depths of potential floods. They are used by urban planners and local authorities to guide land-use planning, and by (future) homeowners and insurance companies to assess flood risk and make informed decisions about insurance premiums and mitigation measures. Integration of real-time and forecast data could be relevant in warning contexts. While Berlin provides an interactive platform to visualize this information, in some regions such maps are only available for viewing in city halls. To make it even easier to understand flood risks for specific locations, this project aims to translate flood hazard maps into a first-person augmented reality (AR) experience.

This topic is well-suited for students with an interest AR development / 3D visualization, GIS data processing and real-time data integration. If you’re interested, please get in touch via e-mail to schedule a meeting where we can discuss the topic in more detail and align on the scope.

The thesis will be co-supervised by Simon Burkard from Fraunhofer FOKUS ESPRI.
