Public Safety and Security Using Smart Technologies

We present two building blocks of the SAFEST project, which help to increase public safety and security

  • Crowd detection: We identify and measure the density of crowds using privacy-friendly cameras and lightweight algorithms. Camera technology covers high-end infrared cameras as well as low cost commodity hardware (Microsoft Kinect). Application scenarios of our solution include mass panic prevention and queue management.
  • RIOT: Using the friendly open source operating system for the Internet of Things, RIOT, we integrate surrounding devices to react on threats. RIOT allows easy out of the box development on embedded devices.
