Recently, Prof. Dr. Claudia Müller-Birn was interviewed by the Freie Universität Berlin newsletter about our current research on artificial intelligence (AI) in the emergency department (ED), which we are investigating within the ILLUMINATION Project. The full text can be found here (German only).

In the interview, she describes how an AI companion could support patients during waiting times in the ED while systematically collecting medically relevant information. By asking structured questions about symptoms, the system aims to ease the workload of clinical staff and improve patient flow.

At the same time, Prof. Dr. Claudia Müller-Birn stresses that AI cannot replace human empathy, which is an essential component of care in the emotionally demanding ED environment. The technology is therefore intended as a supportive tool rather than a substitute for healthcare professionals.
