Abstract

Artificial intelligence has already arrived in healthcare and patient care. This arrival raises hopes, but it also causes fears. Will AI replace radiological reporting in the future? Will machine learning provide the basis for far-reaching treatment decisions at the bedside by calculating disease prognoses more reliably than clinical assessment? How is patient care changing, and what are the (new) roles of physicians, nurses, and patients? In my lecture, I would like to discuss these topics from an ethical point of view. Using concrete case studies from healthcare, such as an ML model that calculates patients' life expectancy, the lecture will outline ethical AI requirements.

Biography

Susanne Michl is a Professor of Medical Humanities and Medical Ethics at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin since 2017. Her research focuses on concepts of individualization/personalization in human medicine, their ethical implications in the past and the present, and narrative medicine with data/evidence-based medicine. As a clinical ethics consultant, she moderates difficult treatment decisions at the bedside. From an applied perspective, she is particularly interested in decision-making processes grounded in data and narrated life stories, values, and interactions among participants.
