Conceptualizing the workhop
The workshop on »Visualization Review and Critique« was offered by the HCC Data Lab and conceived by Prof. Dr. Claudia Müller-Birn and Katrin Glinka, who also guided the participants through the workshop. Over the course of 90 minutes, the workshop introduced the participants to a systematic approach that supports them in critically reflecting on visualizations. The goal of the workshop was to support participants in developing skills to critically evaluate visualization designs and transfer this knowledge to the development of their own effective visualization designs in their hands-on projects. The workshop covers aspects such as domain, context, and stakeholders, data type and origin of data, as well as visual encodings, design and interaction techniques. The underlying concept builds on an understanding of critique as " a form of analysis that uses critical thinking to determine whether a design is expected to achieve its desired objectives (and adhere to any pertinent best practices or heuristics)" . The workshop was inspired by a course assignment developed by Jeffrey Herr as well as a course assignment developed by Cecilia Aragon (both at University of Washington).
