International Workshop at the 13th KOLI CALLING INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPUTING EDUCATION RESEARCH

School of Computing, UEF, Joensuu, Finland, November 13th - November 14th, 2013

To participate send a mail to teresa.busjahn@fu-berlin.de. It is possible to participate independent of attending Koli Calling. Participants will get eye movement data of reading and comprehension processes of expert programmers, and a coding scheme for annotating the process. You will annotate the video, and reflect on the (perceived) intentions behind the visible pattern. Applying and refining the coding scheme on the data gives insight into the higher order comprehension strategies of the reader.

A short individual reflection and position paper of the results and perspectives for teaching programming is required by the participants [max. 2-3 pages]. As a result, participants will jointly prepare a paper with the data and the refined coding scheme.

IMPORTANT DATES

  • Making data and tools available for participants, as well as instructions for coding and position paper: beginning of September 2013

  • Deadline for submissions: October 14th

  • Workshop: November 13th (evening) – November 14th

ORGANIZERS

Roman Bednarik, University of Eastern Finland, Finland

Teresa Busjahn, Freie Universität Berlin, Germany

Carsten Schulte, Freie Universität Berlin, Germany

WORKSHOP OUTLINE

  1. Pre-workshop: sharing eye movement data and coding scheme
    • Participants will get eye movement data of reading and comprehension processes of expert programmers, and a coding scheme for annotating the process. They will annotate the video, and reflect on the (perceived) intentions behind the visible pattern. Applying and refining the coding scheme on the data gives insight into the higher order comprehension strategies of the reader.
    • The participants will write a short individual reflection and position paper of the results and perspectives for teaching programming (max. 2-3 pages). A proceedings of the papers will be published.

  2. 13th November, evening: get together

  3. 14th November:

    1. Morning session

      • Discussion of coding scheme, facilitated by position statements reflecting the coding scheme and reliability analysis of independent coding results

      • Refining/consensus new coding scheme

      • Applying refined scheme to code an additional record of eye movements

    2. Afternoon session

      • Drafting the paper (data and coding scheme)

      • Presentation and discussion of positions statements on code reading from participants

      • Drafting the paper (positions on code reading)

      • Outlook, brainstorming ideas for further work

  4. After workshop

    • Writing up the papers

    • Publication of coding scheme

    • (Potential follow-up activity, planning of the next workshop at WiPSCE 2014)

A charge of circa 25 € extra to the conference fee for workshop participants will include refreshments.
