K.G. studied mathematics at the Free University of Berlin and the Technical University of Berlin, graduating with a master's degree in 2020. He is currently working in Berlin for a management consulting firm.

Did you get a doctorate? Why? Why not?

During my studies, I always wanted to fully understand all the details (especially evidence and connections). This has often been very difficult for me in the various scientific works that I have dealt with in seminars and final papers. There were quite a few leaps of thought and assertions that neither my professors nor further literature research could help me with. The idea of having to deal with a multitude of similarly incomplete works on my own research topic was the main reason against a doctorate. Additionally, my experiences in the working world outside of academia were very positive, which made the decision easier for me.

What knowledge or skills did you acquire in your studies that you didn't think you'd ever need?

Frustration tolerance. This is developed in studies by dealing with challenging mathematical problems for years. In professional life, it sometimes helps not to give up (too quickly) in the face of the numerous obstacles that one encounters while working.

What would you have liked to have done or learned during your studies?

The studies include many other offerings in addition to lectures, such as university sports and foreign language courses. I would take the time to try out many different things and get out of my comfort zone - not for future work, but for life.

Why did you decide on your current career?

I really like project work in management consulting. Projects are time-limited, so I can be sure that I'll see and learn something new after a certain period. Ideally, in the initial years, one also has the option to look at various industries and subject areas or to delve into one area. Although my actual influence on the project selection has proven to be relatively limited, I have not regretted my career decision so far.

What recommendations do you have for students who want to complete their studies in a timely manner?

Start early applying for interesting positions, as the response and feedback times can often be very long. Don't let rejections or setbacks discourage you.
