Cluster of Excellence "Languages of Emotion" (LoE)
Winter Term 2008-9
Every other Wednesday, 4.30−6 pm; JK33/KL 202, Habelschwerdter Allee 45.

Preparation

4 February
– Write a 250- to 350-word critique of Johann Hari's text about science education or one from your area of expertise. Focus on the author's intent, where his statements lead the reader, and how they do so.

14 January
– Just read ahead to Unit Six. Give three to five structural or stylistic characteristics that, in your view, a critique has to exhibit.

17 December
– Read Units Two and Three in the book, which are on General–Specific and Problem–Solution texts. Mark any exercises that you feel we should discuss in class.
– Produce a 250-word text from your field of expertise that follows the Problem–Solution paradigm as per the worksheet (PDF). Pay special attention to the general nature of the first phase and the "cool consequences" character of the last.

3 December
– Write a 250-word summary of Diamond's "Kinship With the Stars" (PDF). See Unit Five for some suggestions.
– If there are exercises from Unit Five that you think it would be instructive to deal with in class, mark them and raise that particular point in class.

5 November
– ./.

22 October
– First actual class. Don't worry about a thing, I'll bring along the books and everything else we'll need.

15 October
– Introductory meeting, starts at 5 pm.
