Abstract: How can single-cell biology organize an overabundance of data? Single-cell omics has entered a phase of data abundance, with increasingly large and heterogeneous datasets across tissues, diseases and technologies. This talk considers cell atlases and single-cell foundation models as two complementary infrastructures for integrating this stratified landscape: one grounded in curation, ontology and community consensus, the other in large-scale representation learning. It explores how these systems may interact in the future, and how they might support not only data integration, but also the identification of genuinely new biological states.
