Port-Hamiltonian Systems: Structure and Analysis
Abstract: Port-Hamiltonian systems provide a unified framework for the modeling of physical systems based on the flow, storage, and dissipation of energy. Originating from the interplay between Hamiltonian mechanics, network theory, and systems and control theory, they extend the classical Hamiltonian formalism by explicitly accounting for interactions with the environment through energyexchange ports.
Over the last two decades, the port-Hamiltonian framework has been successfully extended from finitedimensional dynamical systems to distributed-parameter systems governed by partial differential equations. This extension has led to a systematic approach for the modeling of thermodynamically open systems and has provided powerful tools for control design based on energy and passivity principles. The infinite-dimensional setting naturally raises a number of analytical questions concerning the dynamical behavior of such systems. In this context, strongly continuous semigroup theory has become one of the central mathematical tools for their study. This talk provides an introduction to the port-Hamiltonian framework and discusses how its structural properties can be exploited within the semigroup setting to analyse infinite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian systems.
