International Women in Mathematics Day on May 12, 2022, from 2pm to 8pm

News from Apr 22, 2022

This year the CRC 1114 will join the festivities for the International Women in Mathematics Day by organizing an in person-event on May 12, 2022, in cooperation with the workgroup “Gender Studies in Mathematics“ at the Institute of Mathematics, FU Berlin.

On this occasion the documentary “Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani” will be screened, followed by talks from female mathematicians.

The event concludes with a reception, where drinks and food will be served, and the chance to meet and network.

Please see the full program below and the flyer here.

Accompanying the event is the exhibition “Women in Mathematics throughout Europe - A gallery of portraits”. The exhibition offers a glimpse into the world of mathematics through photographs (by Noel Tovia Matoff) and excerpts of interviews (by Prof. Sylvie Paycha, University of Potsdam, with Sara Azzali for some of them) of twenty women mathematicians throughout Europe.

TIME: 2pm to 8pm

LOCATION: Arnimallee 22, Gr. Hörsaal (room B.001)

International Women in Mathematics Day:

The International Women in Mathematics Day, first established in 2019, celebrates women in mathematics. It is in honour of Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani, the first and only woman to win the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics. The chosen day refers to her birth on 12 May 1977. Maryam Mirzakhani, who was a professor at Stanford University, died from breast cancer in 2017.

The film “Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani” examines her life and mathematical achievements and has been widely screened as part of the activities for the International Women in Mathematics Day in the past years.
