SDModels: Structured Discrete Models as a basis for studies

in Geometry, Numerical Analysis, Topology, and Visualization

2010-2015

Contents

Summary

The research of the SDModels project has the goal to connect traditionally quite distant fields of current mathematical research via common or structurally similar discrete (mostly: geometric) models. We try to thus make substantial contributions to mathematical research, by highlighting, developing, and exploiting theory for common structures and structural similarities that occur in problems/theories from diverse mathematical application areas. This involves, in particular, the areas of

  1. Discrete Geometry
  2. Discrete Differential Geometry
  3. Mesh Generation/Numerics of PDEs
  4. Topology, Topological Combinatorics
  5. Simplicial Quantum Gravity

The work in the project is concentrated in three Focus Areas, namely
Focus Area 1: High-complexity Geometry
Focus Area 2: Delaunay Geometry: Polyhedral models with circle/sphere patterns
Focus Area 3: Topological connectivity and diameter of Discrete Structures

Job Offer

We are currently offering a PhD position in the area of "discrete and convex geometry"
in the context of the ERC Advanced Grant "SDModels". The emphasis of this position
is on connections between algebraic, convex, and optimization-theoretic properties of
discrete structures. Within the ERC project, the position is embedded in the
"Focus area 1: High-complexity geometry" and an emphasis is put on questions
relating to extremal examples.

Candidates should have

  •  excellent academic degree (Diploma/master degree or equivalent)
  •  very good knowledge of discrete, convex and/or algebraic geometry and/or
    optimization
  • experience with and interest in mathematical software
  •  willingness to get into new subjects
  • excellent English language skills

Please send your application containing,

  • cover letter (including research interests)
  • CV
  • statement of research interests
  • diploma/master thesis
  • letter of recommendation (from thesis advisor)
  • copies of certificates

directly to sanyal@math.fu-berlin.de

The application deadline is October 22, 2012.
