Uplivion - Digital Distribution Solution

The long term goal of the Uplivion project is to replace the DVD as the primary means of distributing high-end computer games and to make them available through the web browser instead. Our technology enables players to start playing a game by simply navigating to a website and pressing the play-button, much in the same way as watching a video on YouTube.

To make this possible, we are developing a highly optimized suite of technologies that cover all aspects of streaming games across the internet.

Our project has been awarded the EXIST-grant and started in March 2011.

In recent years we have seen how TV and Telephone became digitalized and are now increasingly entering our homes through the internet. Even the share of Books that are sold as eBooks on Amazon is growing rapidly. Only computer game publishers have so far resisted the trend to publish their products digitally and cling to distributing their high-end products on DVD. We have set out to deliver the technology that will make games accessible easily and instantaneously for everyone through the web browser.

To make this possible, we are developing a suite of technologies that bridge the gap between browser and high-end gaming technology, and which allow game content to be streamed to the players’ computers as they play the game. Beyond that we reduce the amount of data that has to be transferred across the network by providing compression technology that is specifically tailored for handling game content, and is thus highly efficient for this purpose.
