Course Description

In this proseminar, we discuss research results from the field of Data Visualization from a human-centered perspective. In recent decades, visualizing data in an engaging and easily understandable way has become increasingly important, while the technical possibilities and methods of interaction have changed extensively.

We will discuss the foundational principles of human-centered design (e.g., user studies and evaluation methods) traditional innovations and challenges (e.g., accessibility, contextual visualization, storytelling), but also more up-­to-­date research (e.g., mental models, XAI, adaptive visualizations). The goal is to discuss existing approaches and ideas in data visualization from a human-centered perspective and to deduce influences for your own practice of software and visualization development.

In this course, we will cover a selection of important paper on pioneering work in Data Visualization. Each semester, the focus of the more recent work might change. Each week, one student will present one important approach, and we will discuss it in class. Articles are chosen because they describe either a specific sub-­area, represent the first article in a specific area, or introduce different approaches in the area.

This Proseminar is offered in conjunction with the „Data Visualization“ lecture. Students should take the lecture at the same time as the proseminar or have already taken it in a previous semester.
