Heuristic Evaluation of ELAP - An Educational Material Platform

Funding:

ENU Projekt (Freie Universität Berlin)

Term:
Feb 10, 2014 — Apr 28, 2014

The ELAP web application is envisioned to serve as a platform used by professors and educational staff to find and share teaching material related to entrepreneurship education. It is developed by the Entrepreneurial Network University of Freie Universität Berlin.

The Human-Centered Computing (HCC) Research Group conducts a heuristic evaluation at an early stage of the developing process of the ELAP platform. From the beginning, the goal of the ELAP team is a high user’ acceptance towards the platform and therefore, a user-centered design process is employed. Since the main features are already implemented, members of the HCC Research Group conducted a heuristic evaluation by analyzing  whether the existing user interface follows  specific usability principles or not.

Based on the insights from the heuristic evaluation two main user interface design concepts are developed and implemented:

  • A redesign of the landing page is carried out.

  • New interaction and visual design concepts for searching teaching material and filtering search results were developed.

All created designs were evaluated in several thinking-aloud user testing sessions.
