Panel Discussion "Dare to know, need to know, want to know: How much data collection is acceptable?" at Berlin Science Week

News from Sep 18, 2023

On November 03, 4.30 pm, Prof. Dr. Claudia Müller-Birn will take part in a panel discussion together with Prof. Dr. Helena Mihaljević, Professor of Data Science at HTW Berlin and cooperation partner in the research project FreeMove, Prof. Dr. Piotr Dabrowski, Professor of Applied Computer Science at HTW Berlin and Bendix Sältz, board member of the digital policy association D64 - Center for Digital Progress. The discussion takes part within the framework of the Berlin Science Week.

The discussion addresses questions regarding data collection and privacy. What do we actually know about data collection? How much of ourselves and our data do we want to disclose and where is it advisable to set limits? How much transparency is important, what should companies do, and what guard rails make sense? On the panel, Prof. Dr. Claudia Müller-Birn will emphasize ethical and inclusive approaches to data: “We should include different perspectives in data collection, strive to understand contexts of data creation, and critically question existing data practices (data sources, methods, and assumptions). It is time to challenge the status quo and develop data practices based on improved participation.”

The discussion will take place in a hybrid format. Participation is free of charge.
