Starting in the winter semester 2019/20, the course offerings will be successively converted to the SPO (2019). Students under the old regulations can either continue their studies on the basis of the StO/PO (2012) or change to the new regulations. Please note the following:

If you remain in the old regulations...

The compulsory modules of the first semester are no longer offered! Regular examinations for these modules could be taken in the winter semester 2019/20 for the last time.

Missing/not yet completed modules can be replaced by the following modules of the new order:

• Genomics: Foundations in Bio-Medicine
• Algorithms: Foundations in Computer Science
• Numerics: Numerics II (from the Master's programme in Mathematics)
• Optimization/Statistics: Foundations in Mathematics and Statistics
  If both "Statistics" and "Optimization" are missing, the "V-Module Machine Learning in Bioinformatics" (as a substitute for Statistics) must be completed additionally.

Please note: Modules that do not come from your study programme cannot be selected directly in Campus Management. Please fill out the module registration form and bring or send it to the examination office.

Core modules and practice modules will continue to be offered, sometimes under other course titles:

• Core Module Network Analysis: Complex Systems in Bioinformatics
• Core Module Sequence Analysis: Advanced Algorithms in Bioinformatics

Lectures/seminars for the research module are still offered.
Research internship and master thesis can be completed as before.

A course offering based on the 2012 study and examination regulations will be guaranteed until the end of the summer semester 2021. Degrees based on these regulations will be possible until the end of the summer semester 2022.

If you change to the new regulations...

A change to the SPO (2019) is always possible, it should be done before the beginning of a semester. Please fill out the form "Antrag auf Studiengangswechsel zur SPO 2019" and bring it to the Examination Office Office. If necessary, ask for advice beforehand as to whether a change makes sense in your case.

Modules completed so far can be credited:

Foundation studies:

• Foundations in Bio-Medicine: Genomics
• Foundations in Computer Science: Algorithms
• Foundations in Mathematik und Statistics: Optimization oder Statistics

These recognitions are carried out first. Further completed compulsory modules from the old regulations can be credited for "Introduction to Focus Areas" (see below) or as optional courses (V+Ü, 5 CP).

• Introduction to Focus Areas (12 CP):

1. Two compulsory modules not yet credited for Foundations or
2. One mandatory module (6 CP) not yet included + another (suitable) 5 CP module

"Introduction to Focus Areas" can of course also be taken and further completed compulsory modules can be considered as optional courses (V+Ü, 5 CP).

Profile studies

• Ethics and Policy Questions: had no equivalent so far, it must be attendet.
• Research internship: remains unchanged and can be transferred.

Focus Areas:
Complex Systems

• Complex Systems in Bioinformatics (V+Ü+S, 10 CP): Core module: Network Analysis
• Complex Systems in Biomedical Applications (V+Ü, 5 CP):

1. Core module physiology (V+Ü+S); in addition, it is credited as a seminar (Current Research topics in Complex Systems), or
2. Suitable lecture from the research module (individual case decision)

Advanced Algorithms

• Advanced Algorithms for Bioinformatics (V+Ü+S, 10 CP): Core module: Sequence analysis
• Methods in Life Sciences (V+S, 5 CP): Suitable lecture from the research module (individual case decision)

Data Sciences

• Data Science in the Life Sciences (15 CP): no equivalent in the old study regulations.

Optional courses (Profile and supplementary studies):

• Some core and practical modules have been transferred to the elective area.
• Possibly crediting further compulsory modules from the old regulations (as 5 CP modules, V+Ü)
• Crediting of lectures/seminars from the research module via the "module sleeves" (=modules with flexible content) of the profile areas*

*In the old regulations, the courses in the research module are ungraded, which makes crediting more difficult. However, there is a possiblity of crediting ungraded modules for graded modules with the remark "bestanden" (passed) and marking the crediting in the certificate or the certificate supplement.
